In order to facilitaite the Fisherman community and shipping industry PMD has started to update weather forecast for its coastal areas and Arabian Sea. The WRF model output is available at the spatial resolution of 5Km and temporal resolution of 3 hours so that the commerical activities may be benefited.
Under the JCOMM, WMO/ IOC Joint Commission on Oceanography and Marine Meteorology, a programme is called Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), under which PMD is responsible to provide an enhanced Marine Meteorological Service to shipping community for MetArea-IX. In addition to the services already providing by PMD, SMRFC has also initiated to provide the high resolution forecast for the area upto 3 days.
